Studio City: Fryman Canyon Hike, Then Ventura Boulevard

A hike that starts ten minutes from a hundred restaurants. Climb the Betty B. Dearing Trail out of Wilacre Park while there is still light, then come down onto Ventura Boulevard for dinner.

Why it works

The classic problem with a hiking date is what happens afterwards — you are sweaty, it is dark, and the nearest food is a drive away. Wilacre solves it geographically. The trailhead is off Laurel Canyon and Ventura Boulevard is minutes down the hill, which means you can do a real ninety-minute walk and still be sitting down to dinner before the evening feels over.

Budget the parking

This stopped being a free date on 20 May 2026. The lot is now $7 for up to two hours, with a four-hour daily maximum per vehicle — pay station or cash. The County subsidy that had kept it free for over a decade ended. Bring the cash and do not plan a four-hour epic.

Best for

A second or third date, when you already know you like talking to each other and want ninety minutes of it without a table in the way.

What to wear

Trail shoes, and bring the clothes you want to eat dinner in. The fire road is loose in places and climbs steadily from the gate.

Weather notes

Exposed for much of the climb. On a hot day start at 5pm rather than 3pm, and carry more water than you think you need.

Reservations

Book dinner for about two and a half hours after your parking meter starts. That is the honest gap once you allow for the walk and getting down the hill.
