Atwater Village: Golden Hour on the LA River

The Los Angeles River is concrete for most of its length. Not here. The Glendale Narrows runs over gravel instead, which is why there are herons in it, and Sunnynook River Park puts a bench on the bank at the exact hour it looks best.

Why it works

It is free, it is twenty minutes from most of the Eastside, and it is one of the few places in the city where you can watch the light go without either paying for a view or driving into the hills for it. The pedestrian bridge over the river gives the walk a destination, and Glendale Boulevard is a short stroll away when it gets dark.

Time it properly

The park runs dawn to dusk, so this is a date with a deadline. Arrive about an hour before sunset. The 5 freeway runs alongside and you will hear it — that is the trade for a river bank in the middle of Los Angeles, and it stops registering after ten minutes.

Best for

A first date on a budget that does not look like a budget date, and any evening where you want to be outside without committing to a hike.

What to wear

Layers. The river corridor cools fast once the sun drops behind the hills.

Weather notes

Nothing here is sheltered. If it has rained recently the path can be muddy and the river runs high and fast — look, do not climb down.

Only for dinner. The park half of this date costs nothing and books nothing.
