A free Glendale afternoon that starts inside a 1904 mansion and ends at a pyramid tomb on a hillside. It costs nothing, it takes about three hours, and almost nobody you know has done it.
Why it works
Most free dates in Los Angeles are a walk somewhere pretty. This one has a building worth looking at, an art gallery to react to, and a genuinely odd destination at the top of a climb — Leslie C. Brand is buried under a pyramid up there, alongside his dogs, because he asked to be. That is three different kinds of conversation in one afternoon, and you never open your wallet.
The one thing that ruins it
Brand Library is closed Friday, Sunday and Monday. The park around it is open every day from 6am to 10pm, so the hike always works — but if you want the gallery, you are going Tuesday to Thursday, or Saturday afternoon.
Best for
A first date where neither of you wants the pressure of a dinner bill, and a Saturday afternoon that still feels like an occasion.
What to wear
Real shoes. The gallery half is indoors and casual, but the pyramid trail is a genuine climb on an exposed hillside.
Weather notes
The Verdugos hold heat. In midsummer, do the gallery first and start the trail late in the afternoon, or move the whole plan to the morning.

Pick up the trail at the Miss American Green Cross statue and climb to the Brand family cemetery. The pyramid is the turnaround point.

Ten minutes down the hill. You have earned it, and by now you have spent nothing.

Downtown Glendale and the Americana are about ten minutes away for dinner, which turns a free afternoon into a normal-priced evening without any driving worth complaining about.
Plan B
If you have landed on a Friday, Sunday or Monday, the library is shut. Skip it, park in the same lot, and make the pyramid trail the whole date — the park is open 6am to 10pm every day, and the Miss American Green Cross statue at the trailhead is worth the two minutes.
